The Hosting Scam

There is an old adage of “If it sounds too good to be true it probably is!” This adage should be applied when you are looking for a web hosting company to host your web site.

What most people do not realize is that all hosting companies have the same limitations when it comes to server cost and resources. The limitations are basically the same as your desk top computer. For example, your hard drive can only hold so much data.

What you must realize is that the size of a server’s hard drive is from 80 to 500 gigs. And that the average customer will only use about 100 Megs of disk space and 1 gig of bandwidth a month. So what some hosting companies do is play the numbers game and make up hosting packages that offer tons of storage and bandwidth for about 6 to 9 bucks a month just to entice new customers.

So what do they do when you try to use all of the disk space or bandwidth they offer in their plans? They will usually terminate your sites saying "your site is using too many resources." Is this practice dishonest? You decide…

The lesson here is that there is no magic server that has a never ending supply of disk storage or ram. If a host offers you unrealistic amounts of disk storage and bandwidth Do Not Join Them. If a host only offers plans starting at 6 to 9 bucks a month, Do Not Join Them. Remember, the average web site only uses 100 Megs of storage and less than 1 gig of bandwidth per month. Why pay for something you will never use? Base your decision on recommendations and your experience. If you are not sure what plan you need, start with the smallest plan. If you find that you need more storage or bandwidth, it is a simple matter to upgrade your plan at a later time. Do be taken in by the Hosting Scam!
